Curves For Days

I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed every minute of a book about learning to trust, making new friends as an adult, and finding the person you've been searching for inside yourself before sharing it with others.

Tell No One
by Harlan Coben

This is a well written, typical Harlan Coben read. There are twists and turns up through the last page. It was a quick, entertaining read.

The House Is on Fire
by Rachel Beanland

I liked this book a lot. I liked the way Rachel Beanland took the historical information of the event of the fire and picked specific characters to highlight and give them life. I thought she did a fantastic job of filling in the gaps and imagining their realities. I especially liked the story to the slave girl Cecily and the slave man Gilbert who saved so many white people. I liked the story of the healer woman, highlighting her strength and limitations in society. This is an important story that I had never heard of. I'm glad to have read the book. The staggering statistics about the number of women who died when their husbands survived, without rationale or consequence is difficult to comprehend.

A Quilt for Christmas

A wonderful novella! The story is heartwarming, and the characters are great! One character shows how one can change from bitter to loving. Truly worth the read!

The Diva Frosts A Cupcake
by Krista Davis

I always enjoy Cozy by Krista Davis, but this is one of her better ones. Sometimes her mysteries become a little overly complicated and I find myself just getting to the end to figure out who did it. This one seem to have a little more of a relaxed pace, and gave more time to getting to know the characters. The side story about Humphrey, the funeral director, being chased by multiple women added considerable levity to the book. A solid mystery with plenty of humor, mixed in!

Where the Dead Sleep
by Joshua Moehling

Page turner of a police procedural as we follow an acting sheriff in far northern Minnesota as he tracks down a killer. Further proof that money can't buy happiness has rarely been written.

Second Place
by Rachel Cusk

It seems like this story aims to be evocative and illuminating about art, emotions, and reality. Unfortunately, I found it strained and unsatisfying.

The Current

Very good mystery about a sheriff and his daughter. Plot is set in southern MN and Northern Iowa. Hard to put down.

Bluecrowne

I had a lot of questions and I'm not sure if I am missing something, or if this is just how this series of books operates (since I seem to remember feeling this way after a couple of the other books as well). We get little snatches of information but it's so little, unexplained, or glossed over, we never understand anything of depth about the motivations of the antagonists or their place in the world, despite getting at least 30% of the book from their viewpoint. So that brought it down a good bit. I liked Lucy and Liao's sibling relationship, and the glimpses we see of their relationship to Liao's mother/Lucy's stepmother. The storytelling was much easier to follow when we were in Lucy's POV, and I wish we could could have kept that ease throughout the book, while still getting some aspects of the roaming world and the antagonists, but without feeling left in the dark. I will be coming back for more, because apparently I can't help myself and I am SO curious if I will ever get a good idea of the world and the shadowy side characters and get answers to my many many questions.
