Distant Sons
by Tim Johnston

The author wrote in past and present time, making the reader pause to incorporate the past into the present and understand how this plays into the yet untold story. At times this made for a slow read. Toward the end of the book, the writing style does comes together.

The Royal We
by Heather Cocks

I enjoyed it, but there’s something ironic about a book clearly about the royal family in a gossipy/drama filled way that focuses on how the attention on the royal family is harmful.

The Guest List
by Lucy Foley

View in Library Catalog

I've read quite a few Lucy Foley books and I have enjoyed them. She is a mystery writer, and her characters are interesting, the location and situation engaging. If you are looking for a good mystery, then this (really any of her books) is a good one to curl up with. The scene is a remote island in Ireland, the situation is a wedding. The secrets are starting to open up, the history between the guests making an appearance and then someone turns up dead. Pick this one up and you won't want to put it down until you know who, what and why!

The Investigator

First book in the series, took awhile to get used to the characters. But I'll read the next one!

The Art Of Racing In The Rain
by Garth Stein

Just a feel good yet sappy kind of read that brings a few tears, makes you a little angry, but has a happy ending. And all with the metaphor of race car driving! I liked it!

The Empress Of Salt And Fortune
by Nghi Vo

View in Library Catalog

The first installment of Vo’s Singing Hills cycle, this debut novella is a work of art. With a smart framework to keep the structure and the storytelling clean, Vo effectively immerses readers in the world with minimal set-up. Readers are introduced to Cleric Chih, as they go on their journey traveling around the Ahn Empire recording stories, both current and historic. Chih and their traveling companion, Almost Brilliant, are on their way to the capital for the new empress’s coronation at her first Dragon Court. However, upon learning that Lake Scarlet, a site that had been under imperial lock was being declassified, they had to detour and try to be the first to get the true story of the place. Finding a single individual left, who goes by Rabbit, Chih sets upon the task of cataloging the site and slowly unravelling the history of Lake Scarlet and In-yo, the Empress of Salt and Fortune. What they discover is a story of sorrow and rebellion. Two women who find themselves tied to each other in ways they could have not foreseen when they started out. As they stand on the threshold of a new empire on the rise, will In-yo and Rabbit be able to live with the choices they have made and the consequences that follow. Do you understand what it means to live with a secret that could undo a new dynasty? Or how that secret might destroy you more if it ever came to light? What is truth and what needs to be remembered?

I Must Be Dreaming

Not deep, but a lot of fun! It caused me to laugh out loud at several points.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau
by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

View in Library Catalog

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau was a mixture of historical fiction and science fiction. Having been familiar with the Island of Doctor Moreau, I may have expected more of a thriller like book. Instead, it read more like a historical fiction book with some romance thrown in. It was a fun read and the environment of the Yucatán peninsula during the 1800s introduced me to some knew language and background. It was a fun take on the source material, but doesn't quite live up to the original.

Prom Mom
by Laura Lippman

I like dark and twisty books, and that lead me to Prom Mom, but it wasn't as dark and twisty as promised. It also focused a lot on covid, so if you don't want to read about the pandemic in your fiction world, stay away from this one.
