Intriguing.

Jane Austen, the Secret Radical
by Helena Kelly

This book provides some interesting historical perspective on Austen’s world. It shows how she included “radical” (at the time) social and political commentary in her books within the safety of domestic/romantic novels.

Goblin Mode

I found this disappointing. I was hoping for a more 'cottagecore' approach with interesting illustrations & photos. This is not that. It is a typical self-help book for self-described goblins--are they hoarders? live in huts? hunt mushrooms?--that gives reinforcement to their chosen lifestyle. It claims to help people accept their diversity and imperfections, but it is not helpful to describe people as gross, strange, or imperfections,I was hoping for more original content. A lot of this is recycled info--for example, how to mend or upcycle clothing or forage for wild food. Illustrations do not add to the experience for me. They all green sketches of various things like socks and bottles with a recurring 'goblin' that looks like a stuffed doll with a zigzag mouth. Obviously, this wasn't for me.

This was my first Harry Potter fanfic and it did not disappoint!

A Good Hard Look
by Ann Napolitano

I didn't know until the end that this book's main character Flannery was a fictional version of the acclaimed Southern writer of the same name. Nevertheless, the story was a wonderful take on the human condition, and the rocky road each character travelled on the way to redemption.

Take A Hint, Dani Brown

The main characters were very likeable and their chemistry was very cute in this modern romance. The characters’ relationship was kind of slow to develop, but very steamy when it finally did! I really enjoyed the switching between the male and female characters perspectives.

Read Dangerously
by Azar Nafisi

“Great fiction is based on a democracy of different perspectives, where even the villain has a voice, while bad fiction reduces all voices to one voice: that of the writer who, like a dictator, stifles all of the characters in order to impose his message or agenda. Great works of literature, works that are truly dangerous, question and expose that dictatorial impulse.” If you do not believe that books, that words matter, that they shape our thoughts, our beliefs, the way we live our lives and how they have the power to alter our lives, then do yourself a favor and read this book and feel the power of the writing.

The Sober Curious Reset

Loved this book and it felt like a more open, approachable perspective. I took so much great information and learned a lot about myself and my habits.

Icebreaker
by Hannah Grace

The first book in the Maple Hills series and the first novel by Hannah Grace. It’s about college athletes, Stassie an ice skater and Nate a hockey player. I thought it was a bit long. Very steamy with a several chapters focused on that. There is also a lot of drinking too. The bookstagram community loves this book. It felt like reality tv and I couldn’t look away for that reason.
